The Deteriorating Condition of Sir Gino
Long-time Cheltenham Festival favorite, Sir Gino, has unfortunately been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a ligament infection. The five-year-old was initially sidelined from an intended run at Newbury on Saturday due to what was characterized as a “small wound” on his hind leg. However, this minor injury has developed into a more serious issue, forcing Sir Gino into an equine hospital for treatment.

Impact on Upcoming Events
Owned by Joe and Marie Donnelly, Sir Gino boasted an impressive record of five wins in five races in Britain, including two victories over fences. His potential was clear, as he was listed as short as 8/11 for the Arkle Chase on day one of the Cheltenham Festival in March. Unfortunately, his recent setbacks mean he will not compete in this prestigious event.
Trainer’s Statement and Future Prospects
Trainer Nicky Henderson confirmed the seriousness of Sir Gino’s condition in a statement shared via X, explaining, “Unfortunately, Sir Gino’s situation has deteriorated somewhat, leading to his admission into the equine hospital. This will require lengthy treatment that will sadly rule him out of any further racing this season.” While this news is disappointing for both the owners and fans, Henderson expressed optimism about the horse’s recovery, stating, “We are doing everything possible to help this incredible bright light back to full fitness next season.” This marks the second consecutive festival Sir Gino has missed, as health issues have challenged Henderson’s Seven Barrows yard.
