World basketball history has gone through the following 5 outstanding periods:
Phase 1 – From 1891 to 1918
This is the period when basketball is formed and creates its own characteristics.
In 1894, America issued the first basketball competition rules with strategies and ways to play professional basketball
In 1904, basketball became a competitive sport at the 3rd Olympic Games.
In 1913, the first Asian basketball championship was held in Manili in the Philippines.
Phase 2 – From 1919 to 1931
Basketball is developing strongly in many countries with international matches.
In 1919, the first International Basketball Tournament was held in Italy, America, France, and Southeast Asia
In 1923, the basketball team played friendly matches with three countries: France, Czechoslovakia and Italy
Phase 3 – From 1932 to 1947
On June 18, 1932, the International Basketball Federation abbreviated as FIBA with 8 participating countries was established.
In 1935, the European Basketball Championship was held in Switzerland.
In 1936, Men’s Basketball was added to the competition program of the 11th Olympic Games in Berlin with 21 participating countries.
In 1938, the European Women’s Basketball Tournament was held in Rome and the Italian team won the championship.
Phase 4 – From 1948 to 1965
The history of basketball development has had many new aspects such as mini basketball for children aged 8-12, introduced to the public for the first time by an American, T. Artrer.
In 1948, the World Basketball Federation had 50 participating countries.
In 1950, the first Men’s Basketball World Cup was held in Argentina
In 1953, the World Women’s Basketball Championship was held for the first time in Chile.
In 1965, the World Basketball Federation had 122 members.
Phase 5 – From 1966 to present
In 1972, Women’s Basketball was added to the Olympics.
In 1983, FIBA united 157 national basketball federations on all 5 continents.
In 1987, FIBA increased to 168 member countries
In 1988, FIBA increased to 202 member countries.
To date FIBA includes 168 member countries.
